How to Get a German Tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer) | 2026

If someone at work or the bank is asking for your Steueridentifikationsnummer and you’re wondering where to even begin — good news: you’ve probably already started the process without knowing it.

1.  What Is the Steueridentifikationsnummer?

The Steueridentifikationsnummer (also called Steuer-ID or IdNr) is your permanent 11-digit personal tax ID in Germany. It doesn’t change when you move, change jobs, or get married — it stays with you for life. You’ll need it for your employer, your bank, and your tax return. Without it, things don’t move far.

2.  You Don’t Need to Apply — It’s Automatic

This surprises most newcomers. There’s no separate form, no appointment, and no fee. Your Tax ID is issued automatically by the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (Germany’s Federal Central Tax Office) once you complete your Anmeldung — your official address registration. If you’ve already done your Anmeldung, the process is already running. If you haven’t yet, that’s your first step — we’ve covered it in our Anmeldung guide.

3.  How Long Does the German Tax ID Take to Arrive?

Your Tax ID is sent by post to your registered address. It usually arrives within 2 to 4 weeks of your Anmeldung — though during busy periods like September and October, it can take up to 6 to 8 weeks.

One thing that catches people out: put your name on your mailbox before your Anmeldung appointment. The letter comes from a government office, and if your name isn’t on the box, it won’t be delivered — it’ll be returned to sender. This is the most common reason people don’t receive it.

4.  What to Do If Your Steuer-ID Doesn’t Arrive

If several weeks have passed and nothing has arrived, go to bzst.de and use the online form to request a replacement. Fill in your full name, date of birth, and registered address. For security reasons, the BZSt can only send it by post — it cannot be emailed.

Need it urgently? Skip the post and visit your local Finanzamt in person. Bring your passport and your Anmeldebestätigung (registration certificate). Many offices can look up and print your Tax ID on the spot.

5.  Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work in Germany without a Tax ID?

Yes — you can start working. Let your employer know it’s on the way. They’ll adjust everything once you hand it over.

Where can I find my Tax ID if I’ve misplaced it?

Check a previous payslip (Gehaltsabrechnung), your annual income tax statement (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung), or ask your employer’s payroll department — they’ll have it on file.

Does my Tax ID change if I move within Germany?

No. It’s permanent and stays the same no matter how many times you move.
