Munich’s Eisbachwelle Is Back Open

Munich has had its wave back since May 8, 2026 — but it took a death, a vanished wave, and months of uncertainty to get here. The Eisbachwelle, the famous natural surf wave inside the Englischer Garten, was shut down in April 2025 after a 33-year-old woman died after getting entangled in her leash during a late-night session. Then came the twist nobody expected: during routine riverbed maintenance, engineers accidentally removed too much sediment and the entire 1.5-metre wave simply disappeared. Munich brought in a team from Hamburg with sonar equipment to study the riverbed. Impatient local surfers secretly installed a wooden ramp in the river overnight — it worked for exactly one day before the city tore it out. Then, in early May 2026, the wave reformed on its own. Mayor Dominik Krause made it official immediately.

The reopening is the result of close work between the city and Munich’s surfing community — IGSM and Surf Club Munich. The new rules are firm: a quick-release leash (selbstlosende Leash) is mandatory, no surfing after 10 PM, never alone, and only experienced surfers aged 16 and above may ride independently. The city is clear that tampering with safety signs at the wave can trigger an immediate re-closure. Krause put it simply: “Surfing at the Eisbach is part of Munich’s way of life. The Eisbachwelle is a landmark of this city.”

Whether you surf or not, the Eisbachwelle is worth your afternoon. It sits right at the southern entrance to the Englischer Garten, five minutes from the city centre, and costs absolutely nothing. On a warm Munich day, watching someone carve a river wave while joggers and cyclists pass behind them is one of those moments that makes this city feel like nowhere else in Germany. Go see it.
